The safe way

At Allied, we recognize that a single accident is one accident too many. In fact, road accidents are the leading cause of death and injury in the workplace, especially for the transportation industry. With this in mind, the Allied Safe Driving Initiative (ASDI) was developed & implemented in January 2016 with the goal to completely eradicate work related road accidents. ASDI offers in-depth and rigorous safe driving training to over 1,000 drivers and is based on three important parameters, which have helped us enhance our road safety record.

Empowering Drivers

We ensure that our drivers have their hands of the wheel of ‘safety’, so to say. That is why we impart training to them periodically throughout the year. We emphasize on driver training, including increasing the frequency as well as continually improving the content & delivery of our training sessions in order to provide maximum benefit to our drivers & ensure their safety & competency is of the highest possible standard.

We have developed a robust in-class training program with modern & precise methods of instruction based on driver feedback. These sessions provided us with the perfect platform to make case studies of past incidents & investigations that were directly linked to our workplace, which made the training sessions personal & relevant to the drivers.

As well as theoretical classroom-based training, new drivers also receive 2-week on-the-job training with our most experienced drivers who train them in applying the best driving practices. This has allowed trainees to witness firsthand safe driving skills and learn the nuances of driving in the ‘safe lane’. We have also made competency testing mandatory at the end of each training program. This has helped us evaluate the performance of the trainee & ensure that they are not only licensed to drive their vehicle but fully knowledgeable & competent to do so in the safest manner possible.

What’s more, we have received and continue to engage professional help from external organizations such as specialist training providers, government authorities, and Dubai Police to supplement and enhance the quality of the training we provide.

Better Safety Assets

We invested heavily in upgrading company assets & infrastructure to enhance road & driver safety. We introduced speed limiting devices in our entire fleet to ensure the vehicles do not exceed 80 km/h. We also worked closely with our clients such as Nestle to introduce longer trailers into our fleet to increase our load capacity, which has reduced the number of trips made. What this truly means is that our drivers spend less time on the road, thereby reducing the risk and reducing costs. This has also reduced our carbon footprint while our new modern vehicle washing system, which recycles 80% of the water used, has also helped to reduce the environmental impact of our operations.

Performance Monitoring

The last element of ASDI is focused on improving our performance monitoring & measuring abilities while rewarding safe driving. We upgraded our GPS & ERP integration so that our entire fleet can be closely monitored in real-time. A mobile security team was tasked to increase route inspections, and our Emirates SkyCargo fleet was fitted with CCTV cameras. This has helped us better monitor driver safety performance and improve our incident analysis techniques. Last but not the least, we introduced a special Employee Award Scheme to reward the safest drivers every month. This extra incentive has motivated them to be committed to best safe driving practices.

The result?

We can safely say that we witnessed a massive improvement in road safety. In fact, the number of accidents fell from 17 in 2015 to 11 in 2016. Overall Safety & Quality related incidents also dropped from 61 in 2015 to 34 in 2016. Despite the overwhelming success of ASDI, we believe our journey has only just begun.
